Kativasti is derived from Sanskrit words ‘kati’ which means lower back and ‘vasti’ which means liquid retention. In this therapy, a barrier is created using black gram paste on the lower back region. This is quite firm and creates a hollow for any liquid to be poured. Depending on various factors such as body dosha type, ailment of the patient, underlying causes and more, the ayurvedic practitioner chooses a mix of herbs and oils for the treatment. The chosen liquid is warmed and then poured into the dam created on the back. This is allowed to sit for a period of time and the liquid is constantly tested to ensure it stays warm. After the oil is removed, the back is gently massaged to stimulate better circulation As with any ayurvedic procedure, kativasti must only be performed on the recommendation of an ayurvedic practitioner
