Takradhara is derived from the Sanskrit words “takra” which means buttermilk and “dhara” which means flow. In this therapy, buttermilk which can be mixed with herbs such as Amla, is used. The treatment is similar to Shirodhara and involves pouring of the medicated buttermilk over the head. The buttermilk is poured into a vessel which slowly streams the liquid over the forehead of the patient. Care should be taken to ensure the stream is directed at the right region. It should be positioned directly above the centre of the forehead, between the eyebrows. It has an immensely cooling effect on the body.
